Improving instruction is the core work of the City Schools of Decatur. We choose to make strides toward these goals through the following actions:
  • agreeing on a rigorous curriculum
  • making changes based on assessments with students, and
  • crafting engaging work for students to accomplish.
Therefore, our mission:
Our mission is to work with and inspire students to grow and develop their ability to learn, think, and inquire through meaningful, motivating, and rewarding learning experiences supported by highly qualified, caring adults in a safe, supportive, and inviting community.

City Schools of Decatur follows the Common Core State Standards.

The College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center serves children from infant – age 4. All infant – preKindergarten rooms enact the Georgia Early Learning Standards and the Georgia Pre-K Content Standards.

Our K-3 schools (Clairemont, Glennwood, Oakhurst, Westchester and Winnona Park) use Expeditionary Learning as their reform model. This framework positions all members of the school community as learners, intentionally focusing on creating and sustaining community. Students use K-3 curriculum standards to guide their learning experiences and expeditions, crafting meaningful and authentic products. Kindergarten students are assessed using a standards-based report card. See individual school webpages for support materials.

Our 4th and 5th grade students attend The 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue which is an International Baccalaureate School, Primary Years Programme. This world-wide framework uses Units of Inquiry to help students assume ownership for their learning within a rigorous curriculum. Renfroe Middle School is a Middle Years Programme within the International Baccalaureate Schools Organization.

Decatur High School continues the Middle Years Programme through Grade 10 and is authorized as a Diploma Programme provider.
